PAL Robotics at the Mobile World Congress 2023
PAL Robotics and our robots have taken part in one of the world’s most influential exhibitions for the connectivity industry this week, MWC 2023 (Mobile World Congress) at Fira Gran Via, Barcelona, showcasing technological solutions that are actively involved in projects to make our daily lives easier, in areas such as assisted living, healthcare, and education. As well as being shown by PAL Robotics directly, our solutions were also displayed by partner companies demonstrating both their current initiatives and future aims, where robots will play an increasingly active role.
MWC (Mobile World Congress) is the largest and most influential event for the connectivity ecosystem including 5G and 6G and is held annually to showcase some of the latest innovations in the world and discuss the future of tech. The event is attended by some of the largest technology corporations in the world, such as Samsung, Huawei, Orange, Vodafone, and Microsoft.
For Barcelona, the development of the digital ecosystem is high on the agenda, with the ‘La Generalitat de Catalunya Pavilion’ (Government of Catalonia Pavilion) hosting technology companies at MWC 2023 including PAL Robotics. President of Catalonia, Pere Aragonès visited the event and even stopped by our booth to hear more about how robotics are set to shape our future.
PAL Robotics’ robots were featured at the event in a number of use cases. These included:
ARI the social robot aiding customer experience at Mobile World Capital Barcelona
PAL Robotics’ social robot ARI at Mobile World Capital Barcelona – here the humanoid robot ARI was part of an interactive booth display for visitors. The robot provided instructions through it’s touch screen on the booth’s interactive activities as well as collecting feedback data on user experience. At the booth, visitors had the opportunity to delve into an immersive experience through which they were able to develop their senses of touch, smell and taste via virtual reality.
Mobile World Capital Barcelona promotes the development of the mobile and digital ecosystem to position Barcelona as a global digital reference hub, as well as encouraging the digital development of society and helping improve people’s lives globally through the humanistic use of technology. Mobile World Capital Barcelona are one of the city hosts of the MWC event.
TIAGo the mobile manipulator in assisted living demos at Government of Catalonia organised by the Institut de Robòtica
The robot SOCRATES, a PAL Robotics’ TIAGo mobile manipulator robot at the Institut de Robòtica i Informàtica Industrial – the robot participated in demonstrations to show what assistive robotics of the future will look like. Featured was a home-scene, with TIAGo robot bringing objects such as eye glasses to a user, helping to make the bed, delivering news and quizzes, and even assisting with feeding for those with disabilities or reduced capabilities.
The Institut de Robòtica i Informàtica Industrial owns TIAGo robots that serve as experimental platforms for research in assistive robotics. To date, they have been used in human feeding, cognitive therapy for patients with dementia, and in cloth manipulation to assist at home.
The Institut de Robòtica i Informàtica Industrial (IRI), is a Joint University Research Institute by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) that conducts research in human-centered robotics and automatic control.
ARI interacting engaging visitors at the Catalonia Pavilion with PAL Robotics
PAL Robotics’ social robot ARI at the Catalonia Pavilion – we brought our own social humanoid ARI robot to our booth at the event to interact with visitors, offering handshakes, greetings and the chance to find out further information through the robot’s touch screen.
As well as being used in corporations, ARI is a key member of EU-funded research projects that aim to bring robotic assistance closer, including SPRING – with the robot acting as a receptionist in hospital, and PRO-CARED – with the robot providing an assistive tool for teachers to help deliver personalised education.
ARI the humanoid social robot
ARI robot is PAL Robotics’ social humanoid platform specifically designed for Human-Robot-Interaction and front-desk activities – building on state-of-art Service Robotics and Artificial Intelligence. Our social robot ARI is engaging, expressive and able to provide dynamic information in a variety of settings, such as at events, in businesses, in hospitals, and for education. Equipped with multiple sensors, the robot is able to detect its environment and react accordingly. ARI is expressive and able to attract attention and initiate interactions with visitors.
