We are seeking an experienced Senior Firmware Engineer to join our team and develop real-time firmware for our robotic systems. The ideal candidate has at least 4 years of experience in embedded firmware development, particularly for real-time control of BLDC motors, sensors, and communication protocols. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, ensuring seamless integration of firmware with hardware and software components. Your work will be pivotal in driving innovation and performance in our robotic platforms.

Duties and responsibility

    • Design, develop, and optimize real-time embedded firmware for custom electronic boards used in robotics platforms.
    • Implement BLDC motor control algorithms, including Field-Oriented Control (FOC), current sensing, and filtering techniques.
    • Develop and integrate sensor interfaces (e.g., encoders, temperature sensors, ADC) for precise motion control and monitoring.
    • Work on real-time communication protocols (EtherCAT, CAN, UART, SPI, I2C) to enable high-speed data exchange in robotic systems.
    • Develop and maintain bootloaders for firmware updates and device initialization.
    • Conduct hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing, ensuring robustness and reliability in real-world conditions.
    • Optimize firmware for power management and Battery Management Systems (BMS), ensuring efficiency and safety.
    • Collaborate with hardware engineers to define specifications and ensure seamless firmware-hardware integration.
    • Contribute to firmware architecture design, code reviews, debugging, and performance optimization.
    • Stay updated with emerging technologies and industry best practices to continuously enhance our firmware solutions.

Qualifications

Required skills

      • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
      • 4+ years of experience in firmware development for embedded systems, with strong proficiency in C/C++.
      • Solid understanding of real-time operating systems (RTOS) and microcontroller architectures.
      • Proven expertise in BLDC motor control, including FOC, PWM, current control loops, and filtering techniques.
      • Hands-on experience with Texas Instruments and/or STM32 microcontrollers.
      • Expertise in communication protocols (EtherCAT, CAN, UART, SPI, I2C) for high-speed data transfer.
      • Strong debugging skills, including oscilloscope, logic analyzers, and static code analysis tools.
      • Familiarity with bootloader development for embedded systems.
      • Experience with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing methodologies.
      • Knowledge of power electronics, BMS development, and power management techniques.
      • Experience using version control systems (Git) and CI/CD tools.
      • Fluency in English (Spanish is a plus).

Preferred skills

      • Prior experience in robotics or autonomous systems.
      • Familiarity with embedded middleware solutions such as Quantum Leaps for task scheduling and event-driven architectures.
      • Experience with digital signal processing (DSP) and control loop tuning.
      • Understanding of thermal management and energy efficiency in embedded systems.
      • Exposure to Qt for graphical interface development.
      • Knowledge of Linux-based embedded development.

PAL Robotics invites applications for a Doctoral Candidate Researcher (PhD student) within the prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Industrial Doctoral Network on “Social aWareness for sErvice roboTs” (SWEET) within the Horizon Europe Programme.

To ensure autonomous robots can adhere to social norms and avoid human rejection, they must be socially aware—reactive, proactive, and responsive to human emotions and intentions. Supported by the MSCA, the SWEET project trains researchers to develop robots capable of perceiving and interpreting social contexts. Doctoral Candidates (DCs) will engage in cutting-edge research through an integrated curriculum combining theory and real-world applications.

The consortium includes 10 beneficiaries (7 academic and 3 non-academic organizations) and 15 partner organizations, ensuring comprehensive training in scientific, technical, and personal development skills.

Each DC is required to spend 50% of their total research contracted time (36 months) in a mandatory secondment visiting at other partners/beneficiaries identified by the project, in accordance with the MSCA DN-ID mobility requirements and training objectives, following a 12+6 schema where each DC will do two secondments lasting 1.5 years.

Qualifications

  • MSc or equivalent in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning or closely related field with a focus on Intelligent Systems, Intelligent Robotics or Interactive Robots. Applicants who already have a doctoral degree are not eligible
  • Expertise with the ROS framework
  • Demonstrable evidence of experience with at least one machine learning framework (eg pytorch, keras, etc)
  • Proficiency in video editing software (e.g., Adobe Premiere Pro, Capcut, Final Cut Pro) and photo editing tools (Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom).
  • Excellent programming skills (Python, C++, PyTorch)
  • Excellent command of English, together with good academic writing and presentation skills.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Applicants need to have a European work permit.
  • Fulltime employment as PhD students are offered for 3 years. The starting date of the contract is negotiable, but ideally it would be September 2025.

Desirable skills

    • Experience in human-robot interaction

    • Experience human factors/UX
    • Experience in teamwork within interdisciplinary projects

  • European and non-European students are invited to apply
  • Should ideally possess a master’s degree in a relevant academic field or a comparable degree that allows them to embark in a PhD (applications from candidates who already possess a doctoral degree cannot be considered).
  • Must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Spain for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date. Short stays such as holidays and/or compulsory national service are not taken into account.
  • Must be willing to spend a prolonged time in another institute/country of the network during the PhD thesis period.

*Salary figures include all insurance costs and tax deductions according to national laws at each employing Institute. Salary is scaled based on a pre-defined Country Correction Coefficient.
