At PAL Robotics, we are committed to pushing the boundaries of robotics technology and creating innovative solutions that have a real-world impact. As an Electronics Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in advancing our cutting-edge robotics platforms.
As part of your role, you will be responsible for system design, implementation, and overseeing the manufacturing release. The ideal candidate should demonstrate expertise in system design, both analog and digital circuitry, exhibit strong communication skills, and possess the ability to lead and nurture a team of Electronics Engineers.
Duties and responsibility
- Analysis of requirements, conceptualization and development of electronic circuits with micro-controllers and peripheral components for AD/DA conversion, sensor technology/electrical actuators, bus interfaces etc.
- Design and development of electronics systems for advanced robotics platforms, with a focus on BLDC motor control and power board design for battery-powered systems.
- Develop firmware for motor control, sensor acquisition and communication.
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including mechanical engineering, software development, and firmware engineering, to ensure seamless integration of electronic components.
- Conduct thorough testing, validation, and debugging of electronic systems to meet performance and reliability standards.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and growth.
- Stay abreast of emerging technologies and industry trends to drive innovation in our products.
Qualifications
Required skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of 4+ years of hands-on experience in designing and programming motor control systems for BLDC applications, as well as power board design for battery-powered systems.
- Strong background on motor control drivers, CAN and EtherCAT buses.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as C/C++, Python, and experience with embedded systems development.
- Recent, product-focused experience designing multilayered boards including actual hands-on board layout, bring-up, and debug experience.
- Proven experience with EMI/EMC compliance challenges, design for reliability, and design for manufacturability.ç
- Proven track record of successfully leading complex electronics projects from concept to production.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and a keen attention to detail.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary team environment.
- Experienced Altium Designer user.
- Good C/C++ programming skills.
Desired skills and experiences
- Complex multi-axis control system architecture development: power, communication (CAN, Ethernet, EtherCAT), safety.
- Multi-Axis robot system integration.
- Able to perform and understand SPICE analysis with proficiency.
- Graphical interface development with Qt library.
- Experience dealing with providers and manufacturing workshops.
- Experience working with ERP systems.

Job description
We are seeking an experienced Senior Firmware Engineer to join our team and develop real-time firmware for our robotic systems. The ideal candidate has at least 4 years of experience in embedded firmware development, particularly for real-time control of BLDC motors, sensors, and communication protocols. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, ensuring seamless integration of firmware with hardware and software components. Your work will be pivotal in driving innovation and performance in our robotic platforms.
Primary duties
- Design, develop, and optimize real-time embedded firmware for custom electronic boards used in robotics platforms.
- Implement BLDC motor control algorithms, including Field-Oriented Control (FOC), current sensing, and filtering techniques.
- Develop and integrate sensor interfaces (e.g., encoders, temperature sensors, ADC) for precise motion control and monitoring.
- Work on real-time communication protocols (EtherCAT, CAN, UART, SPI, I2C) to enable high-speed data exchange in robotic systems.
- Develop and maintain bootloaders for firmware updates and device initialization.
- Conduct hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing, ensuring robustness and reliability in real-world conditions.
- Optimize firmware for power management and Battery Management Systems (BMS), ensuring efficiency and safety.
- Collaborate with hardware engineers to define specifications and ensure seamless firmware-hardware integration.
- Contribute to firmware architecture design, code reviews, debugging, and performance optimization.
- Stay updated with emerging technologies and industry best practices to continuously enhance our firmware solutions.
Qualifications
Required skills
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
- 4+ years of experience in firmware development for embedded systems, with strong proficiency in C/C++.
- Solid understanding of real-time operating systems (RTOS) and microcontroller architectures.
- Proven expertise in BLDC motor control, including FOC, PWM, current control loops, and filtering techniques.
- Hands-on experience with Texas Instruments and/or STM32 microcontrollers.
- Expertise in communication protocols (EtherCAT, CAN, UART, SPI, I2C) for high-speed data transfer.
- Strong debugging skills, including oscilloscope, logic analyzers, and static code analysis tools.
- Familiarity with bootloader development for embedded systems.
- Experience with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing methodologies.
- Knowledge of power electronics, BMS development, and power management techniques.
- Experience using version control systems (Git) and CI/CD tools.
- Fluency in English (Spanish is a plus).
Preferred skills
- Prior experience in robotics or autonomous systems.
- Familiarity with embedded middleware solutions such as Quantum Leaps for task scheduling and event-driven architectures.
- Experience with digital signal processing (DSP) and control loop tuning.
- Understanding of thermal management and energy efficiency in embedded systems.
- Exposure to Qt for graphical interface development.
- Knowledge of Linux-based embedded development.
